EASTERN Province permanent secretary Hlobotha Nkunika says matters surrounding the damage on Anoya Zulu Boys Secondary School by Chizongwe Boys Technical High School pupils will be sorted out administratively.

In an interview on Tuesday after announcing the indefinite closure of Chizongwe Boys due to the riotous behaviour, Nkunika said his office and other authorities had resolved that the matter be solved administratively and that all the pupils that were detained by police in connection with the riots be released.

He said at the moment, none of the pupils arrested for rioting would appear in court.

"We have decided to close Chizongwe because of the prevailing situation up to next term, but they may open a week earlier so that they can be able to cover up. Anoya Zulu Boys is on and they are starting their end of term exam on Monday," Nkunika said.

He said he addressed Anoya Boys pupils together with officers from the Ministry of Education and members of the Provincial Joint Operation Committee on Tuesday morning.

Nkunika said Anoya Boys pupils were advised to desist from engaging in violent activities, and that they were very understanding.

"I am happy for the Anoya Zulu Boys pupils for understanding the situation when we spoke to them and they have accepted that there will be no fight back, but we have encouraged them that every pupil should read hard for the betterment of their future. Their future is education and education is the key for their future," he said.

Nkunika said violence does not pay and that it should always be discouraged.

"We are not going to promote violence but we are trying to promote peace, dialogue and competition. If you lose in any competition or any game its part of the game but you should not engage in violent activities when you lose," said Nkunika.

Pupils from Chizongwe damaged property worth over K200 million at Anoya Boys on Saturday morning after they differed at an inter-school athletics tournament on Friday.

Several attempts by Anoya Boys to avenge the damage were thwarted by police.

The confusion also led to the premature closure of Chizongwe Technical High School on Tuesday although armed police officers have continued to guard the school.
