ENOCH Kavindele says he is humbled by the interest his possibility of running for MMD presidency has attracted. Kavindele, who MMD sources said wanted to surprise many by going for the MMD presidency, said the members' will of getting a leader they desire should not be suppressed by anyone.

He said the MMD, whose 20-year reign ended last year which was blamed on rampant corruption and growing Zambians' fatigue with the party, stood a great chance to build a strong comeback team for 2016 depending on the leadership choices it would make during the forthcoming internal election process to replace former president Rupiah Banda.

"The party is still intact in terms of membership. People don't want to leave the MMD," Kavindele said.

"And they believe things are not going well for PF because they have lost their major constituency, the youth and Western Province. The youths are totally dissatisfied. Unknown to many of us, the PF's undertaking to support the youth was strategic and it made all the difference."

Asked to state clearly whether he was going to contest for the position on the MMD presidency, Kavindele said: "It's never a good idea to be too much in a hurry. In the history of the MMD, people in the forefront have never made it."

Kavindele, who served as the last MMD vice-president before the position was scrapped off, said he would state his position on the MMD presidency after Easter break.

"I have not written to the MMD, and in these things, it is never a good idea to be too much in a hurry, and according to the MMD history, people who have been in forefront in the first have never made it, but of course, you don't leave it too late, and that is why after Easter, I will make my position very clear," said Kavindele.

"You can't stand up as a leader and say here I am, vote for me. My view is that when you are elected in that fashion, you will be indebted to your campaign managers. I must stay out of the lobbyist groups, but at the same time you can't stop people from getting the leader they want."

Others campaigning for the MMD presidency include Pastor Nevers Mumba, Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane, Felix Mutati, Kabinga Pande and Moses Muteteka.
