A local youth empowerment lobby group has called on the Government to flush out foreigners who are operating in the retail sector which is reserved for locals under the indigenisation law.

Addressing youths gathered at Ximex Mall complex on Friday, Zimbabwe Entrepreneur Youth Association (Zeya) vice-president Mr James Pande said youths were concerned that foreigners were still dominating sectors reserved for locals.

“We are worried as the youths of this country because foreigners are still dominating the reserved sectors like retailing around town,” he said.

He said despite the Government’s directive for local authorities not to renew operating licences for foreigners, non-Zimbabweans were still dominating the sector.
He urged Government to move with speed so that the young indigenous people would start to benefit from the fruits of the liberation struggle.

“Little is being done in terms of implementing the law. Foreigners are still flooding the reserved sectors. Some of these foreigners are even selling slippers and cooking sadza for sale. This should not be allowed,” he said.

Addressing the same gathering, a member of Zeya, Mr Adrian Chalmers, said it was high time the Government moved with speed to implement the law.

“The law is clear and it needs to be implemented as a matter of urgency to fulfil its provisions,” he said.

He said the Government needed to support its people for the good of the nation.
Mr Chalmers said:“ Asingagoni kubika sadza ndiani? (Are locals not able to cook sadza?) Why give them licences to operate those food outlets?”

Zeya is led by young businessman Mr Munya Maoresa, whose executive has recently held meetings with the Minister of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment, Cde Saviour Kasukuwere, to discuss various empowerment initiatives.
