Mutati faces expulsion

FELIX Mutati is facing expulsion from the opposition MMD following his alleged links to the ruling PF. But Mutati yesterday said he would not respond on the manoeuvres to hound him out of the MMD.

Sources disclosed that Mutati was persuading MMD members to join the PF as a show of no confidence in Pastor Nevers Mumba and the MMD. Mutati was among the six contenders who lost the presidency bid to Pastor Mumba.

The MMD National Executive Committee (NEC) sources accused Mutati of asking some MMD officials to resign and defect to PF, a move meant to weaken and distabilise his party.

They said Mutati, some MMD provincial officials, was plotting with to rise against Pastor Mumba's leadership.

"On the Copperbelt,he's telling people that Pastor Mumba can't be trusted and won't recognise leaders at lower levels. He wants members to resign and join PF to show that people don't have confidence in Pastor Mumba so that the party dies like UNIP because for him, he has a chance in PF...Actually he's trying to engineer within NEC to cause a revolt," the sources said.

"You know he shunned the inauguration of Pastor Mumba. His camp really wanted the inauguration to be a flop."

The sources said Mutati would first be removed as leader of the opposition in the House.

But Mutati said he would not respond because everyone in the party would 'stand up'.

"I have come out (of the meeting) because you have persisted so I will do a lot of listening. The meeting I am in, you know once I start responding to that, everybody would stand so I have got your number I will call you a little later okay," he said.

Asked whether he was aware of manoeuvres to remove him as leader of the opposition in Parliament, Mutati responded before hanging up: "I am saying I have your number. I will call you a little later, thanks."

Recently Solwezi Central MMD member of parliament Lucky Mulusa said there was an unholy alliance between Mutati and the PF.

He said Mutati's laisse faire attitude as leader of the opposition in Parliament stifled progressive debates meant to assist the government.

"It's therefore not surprising that over 25 MMD members of parliament have signed a petition seeking the removal of honourable Mutati as leader of the opposition in Parliament. His only achievement so far was winning the election as leader of the opposition. It's clear that if he was to ascend to the leadership of MMD as president, the same inertia, lack of vision, ingenuity and inability to stand up and guide where PF was going wrong will actually kill the party," said Mulusa.
