RUPIAH Banda promoted the stealing of public funds and ran a corrupt regime while his sons went on rampage, says Wynter Kabimba. Kabimba, who is PF secretary general, said there was nothing that Rupiah Banda would be remembered for other than running a corrupt government which he inherited from Frederick Chiluba.

Kabimba said for instance Banda's children that were not able to do business in Zambia earlier, all of the sudden were driving 10 vehicles and owning mansions in Lusaka city which they never owned before.

He said the PF's performance would only be judged by the Zambian people who voted the party into power last September.

Kabimba was commenting on Andrew Banda's statement that the current government would be judged against what his father did in three years.

But Kabimba said the main reason Zambians voted Banda out of office was that he and his children went on rampage to run a corrupt regime.

"That is all that Mr Banda's government is reputed, nothing beyond that. So there is no judgement that the people of Zambia can render against the Patriotic Front by comparing it with the MMD because the two governments are totally different. The Patriotic Front is fighting corruption. It is strong on the fight against corruption. Mr Banda's government was paying lip-service to corruption when it was promoting corruption internally within the party and within the government," he said.

Kabimba said Banda's administration could not be a yardstick against PF's performance because the values of the two governments were totally different.

"It is just that Zambians are peaceful. If Zambians had not been peaceful, they should have gone on the streets during Rupiah Banda's reign purely on account of corruption; that the resources of this country were being diverted into the pockets of Mr Rupiah Banda's ministers and his colleagues. That his children that were not able to do business in Zambia, all of the sudden we saw them driving 10 vehicles, owning mansions in this city which they never owned before," he said.

Kabimba said Banda's regime did not bring any meaningful development in the country.

"The so-called schools, do they have any teachers? Did they improve any literacy rate of this country? The answer is no! They build a few health centres, but do they have doctors? Did they have drugs? The answer is no! Because the money that was intended for drugs was going into the pockets of Mr Rupiah Banda and his ministers. That was his administration," he said.

Kabimba assured Zambians that PF was committed to delivering on its campaign promises to youths and women.

"We are beginning to put programmes in place both within the party and in government to address issues of unemployment, to address issues of service delivery in the area of education and in the health sector. These programmes can not take off within a period of six to eight months. They need a bit of time, but I can assure the Zambian people that the PF government is going to deliver to them and it will not let them down," he said.

And Kabimba said the PF's performance would only be judged by the Zambian people who voted the party into power last September.

"It is the Zambian people that are going to judge the PF government. They will not be judged by a small ping of political party leaders. Those are not our judges; our judges are the Zambian people. So far the average Zambian still has a lot of confidence in the PF government. The average Zambian still has a lot of trust in the PF government. This government was not voted by Mr Hakainde Hichilema or Mr Charles Milupi and others, no. It was voted for by the people of Zambia. So those are our judges, those are the people whose views we shall ultimately respect," said Kabimba.
