VICE-PRESIDENT Guy Scott says Zambians should begin appreciating the country's products and have confidence in themselves if manufacturing industry has to grow.

Launching the manufacturer's expo at Arcades Shopping Mall in Lusaka yesterday, Vice-President Scott said it was worrying that most Zambians treated locally made products as rubbish, preferring products made out of the country.

"We think products coming from outside the country are better because we do not have confidence in ourselves. We think we produce rubbish. We think anything made in South Africa is better than something manufactured here. And I think we need to break that complex and start being proud," he said.

Vice-President Scott said most locally-manufactured goods were labelled as produced outside the country because that was what most people thought was better.

He said preferring foreign products created employment in other countries at the expense of creating jobs for locals.

"We want to create employment in China to make people produce products in that country by them make things for us; we want to employ people in South Africa to make things for us when we can make them for ourselves, we have no pride and I think that has to change," said Vice-President Scott.

Zambia Association of Manufacturers chairman Chance Kabaghe said his organisation was committed to growing the manufacturing industry.
He appreciated government's support for local products.
