AN MDC-T lawmaker has been arrested for allegedly threatening his wife with murder and witchcraft after she asked for a divorce citing his "promiscuous conduct."
Chikomo Senator Morgan Femai was being held at Matapi Police Station in Harare late Saturday after being taken in on Friday.
“We can confirm that Senator Femai is in custody at Matapi Police Station as we speak. He was arrested yesterday [Friday],” Harare police spokesman Tadius Chibanda told the Sunday Mail newspaper.
Chibanda said the legislator will be arraigned soon on charges of “threatening [his wife with] violence and murder.”
Police say Femai issued the threats after his wife told him she could no longer put up with his bed-hopping ways and violent conduct, and that she wanted out.
The MDC-T politician is said to have responded with spite, telling her that if she goes ahead, he would retaliate by either killing her or deploying witchcraft to make her mentally deranged.
“His wife did not take the threats lightly because the Senator is said to be violent. He is also said to use a lot of juju (sorcery). So, the wife decided to report the case to the police,” Chibanda added.
MDC-T spokesman Douglas Mwonzora was not immediately available for comment.
Femai was a previously unknown player in Zimbabwean politics until May when he shot to national and international infamy after proffering a bizarre method he said could help mitigate the spread of Aids.
He appeared to blame women for the spread of HIV and advised them to bath less, dress shabbily, shave-off their hair, and get circumcised so they do not look attractive to men.
“What I propose is that the government should come up with a law that compels women to have their heads clean-shaven like what the Apostolic sects do,” he reportedly told a parliamentary HIV awareness workshop in Kadoma.
“They should also not bath because that is what has caused all these problems (spread of HIV).”
Femai also recommended circumcision for women.
“Women have got more moisture in their organs as compared to men, so there is need to research how to deal with that moisture because it is conducive for bacteria breeding. There should be a way to suck out that moisture.”
Femai's statements were roundly condemned across the country and beyond.
