THE Anti-Corruption Commission has summoned former president Rupiah Banda in connection with ongoing corruption and criminal investigations in which he has been named. According sources within Banda's office, the summons were delivered to his office on Monday afternoon. "We received the summons yesterday (Monday)and the big man is aware. He appeared shocked after we gave him the letter," said the sources.
According to a letter dated February 4, 2013 authored by ACC director-general Rosewin Wandi and addressed to Banda inviting him for interviews over allegations of corruption and other criminal activities, the ACC stated that it was mindful that he was currently enjoying legal immunity from prosecution on offences he committed whilst in office.
Wandi, however, told Banda that it might serve his interest if he availed himself for interviews over the said allegations.
"The Government Joint Investigations Team has been carrying out investigations into allegations of corruption and other criminal activities in which you have been named," the letter read. "You are kindly requested to make yourself available at the Drug Enforcement Commission head office at Plot Number 9347, Government Road, Ridgeway on Thursday 7th February, 2013 at 09:00 hours."
Wandi cautioned Banda that should he elect not to accept this invitation, which he was entitled to, the law enforcement agencies would have no option but to pursue other legal avenues.
"You are entitled to be accompanied by your lawyers," stated Wandi.
