Former South African President Mr Thabo Mbeki says Zimbabweans have the right to elect a leader of their choice and should be left alone to determine their future. Addressing journalists in South Africa yesterday, Mr Mbeki, who is also the former Sadc-appointed facilitator to Zimbabwe’s inter-party talks, expressed concern over sustained campaigns to discredit last week’s harmonised elections.

“There has been a worrying thing about the Zimbabwe elections, which is that there has been a very sustained campaign before the elections to discredit them before they happen. You could see it quite clearly," he was quoted as saying by South African media.

“The people of Zimbabwe have a right to self-determination. They have a right to decide what to do with their country and their future.”

Mr Mbeki’s remarks come as the MDC-T, which lost the elections to Zanu-PF, and some Western countries are working diligently to discredit the polls.

The African Union, Sadc, Comesa, Sadc Parliamentary Forum and Chinese election observer missions declared the plebiscite free and fair.
