COMMENT - Oh she's 'a gran' now. By the way, 20 hectares is nothing, compared to the commercial estates that existed before land reform - 2,500 hectars on average. The average EU farm is 90 hectares. - MrK
A MASVINGO gran, 64, has been sentenced to an effective nine months behind bars for invading a farm belonging to a prominent local businesswoman.
Zvichareva Chitengu’s case was not helped by the fact that she had also defied an earlier court order to vacate the property which belongs to Varaidzo Chidaku, 33.
Masvingo magistrate Dorothy Mwanyisa was told Tuesday that Chitengu invaded Keit View farm in 2008 and started putting up her homestead and preparing lands for farming without the approval of Chidaku.
After noticing that a section of the 20 hectare property was being cleared for farming activities, the owner approached the courts for relief and Chitengu and her family were ordered to vacate the farm.
But Chitengu is said to have defied the order, claiming she was destitute and had nowhere else to go.
Prosecuting, Jimmy Nyamapfeni reminded the court that Chitengu was initially sentenced to one month imprisonment in 2008 for illegally occupying the farm.
He also said the elderly woman lied to the courts that she had no children yet she was living with her two daughters and grandchildren on the property.
Chitengu urged the court to show mercy but the magistrate was not impressed and ordered her jailed for nine months.
