FIRST lady Maureen Mwanawasa has called on Zambians to sacrifice in order to uplift the livelihood of the less privileged in society. And Ex-Maramba Girls chairperson Rosemary Undi called on government to revert Livingstone’s St Mary’s to a boarding school to relieve the suffering of the pupils.

Speaking at the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative (MMCI) secretariat when she presented a vehicle, 15 computers, a television set and DVD player to St Mary’s Secondary School (formerly Maramba girls), Maureen said it was important for people to help the less privileged in society.

Maureen also called on the Ex-Maramba Girls pupils to reinvest in their former school
“The investment put in us is not meant to remain in us,” she said.

Maureen said there were many advantages to educating girl children so that they are empowered.

Maureen also thanked Standard Chartered Bank, which donated the computers to MMCI last year, for the confidence it had in the organisation.

She said MMCI was not only recognised in Zambia but around the world.

And Undi said there was need for the school to revert to a boarding school. Undi explained that there were a number of pupils who lived far from Livingstone town who rented accommodation in the compounds in Livingstone just to be able to go to school.

She said a number of girls can be seen loitering at the end of the school day.

“It is our cry that, that as much as we can, we can help the school revert back to a boarding school,” she said.

Receiving the donation, St Mary’s head mistress Sr Magdalene Sitondo said the school would put the computer to good use.

Sr Magdalene also thanked the Ministry of Education for giving the school some money to establish a computer laboratory.
