VICE-President Rupiah Banda has said President Levy Mwanawasa's progress is slow to Zambians because they want him to recover quickly. And business at the second class trading area came to a standstill yesterday as people went to attend inter-religious prayers for President Mwanawasa's quick recovery. During the inter-religious prayers at Chipata Day High School yesterday, Vice-President Banda said God had continued to answer people's prayers because the stroke that the President suffered in Egypt was a serious one.
"The President has continued to make steady progress. Unfortunately for us Zambians, the progress is a little bit slow because we would like to see him recover as quickly as possible but that is beyond us," Vice-President Banda said.
He said over the world, people looked to God for assistance whenever they faced a problem beyond their ability to cope with.
"We bow our heads and our selves this morning in order to express that helplessness that people of Zambia are facing; I believe that our prayers will be answered," Vice-President Banda said.
He said he was extremely grateful that he lives among good people who cared for each other.
"Everywhere in our country, people are doing what we are doing, praying that God listens to us and bring back our President in good health so that he continues to give us the good leadership that he was providing. I want to thank everyone for this unity of purpose," Vice-President Banda said.
He said the choice of the venue for the service was deliberate so that children could participate in the prayers because they represented a larger part of the population.
"The President was evacuated on a four-hour flight from Sham-el-Sheik to Cairo to Paris, the journey of four hours and managed to survive a vigorous trip. He has had another operation since he arrived in France and he continued to make steady progress," Vice-President Banda said.
Eastern Province permanent secretary Kelvin Kamuwanga commended the Vice-President for attending the inter-religious prayers.
And scores of people flocked to Chipata Day High School to pray for the President's quick recovery.
The prayers were attended by the Muslim community, Christians, traditional leaders, civil servants and pupils from various schools.
