ZIMBABWE and Mozambique yesterday signed an agreement to strengthen co-operation in the health sector.

Speaking after the signing ceremony in Harare, the Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Dr David Parirenyatwa, said co-operation between the two countries would be in the spheres of technical and professional education, training of health professionals, joint HIV and Aids response, hospital reforms and human resources management.

He said the two governments would also promote twinning of public health institutions, research and development, surveillance, control and management of communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Dr Parirenyatwa said the Memorandum of Understanding covers co-operation in responding to national emergency situations, pharmaceutical areas, health care financing and joint immunisation campaigns.

The agreement also entails undertaking joint bio-medical and health system research.

Zimbabwe and Mozambique would be further obliged to exchange appraisal and evaluation missions to study, analyse and identify health programmes.

"We expect from this moment that we will be able to implement what is put in this MoU. We have been co-operating along the borders but it was informal," said Mozambican Health Minister Dr Ivo Garrido.

Dr Garrido said to implement the MoU, officials from the two countries were due to meet as soon as possible to discuss health issues associated with cross border trading.

"We want Mozambicans coming to Zimbabwe to access health services equally as people here in the same way Zimbabweans crossing into Mozambique will receive fair treatment as Mozambicans," Dr Garrido said.

On Monday, Mozambique donated three containers of drugs and other medical supplies in response to Zimbabwe’s request for assistance to contain cholera.
