Zambia, Malawi must work together to solve financial crisis -Rupiah10 February, 2009 09:12:00
Zambian President Rupiah Banda on Tuesday said that there was need for Malawi and Zambia to work together to solve the current financial crisis for the betterment of the two neighbouring countries.
Speaking on arrival at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe for a two-day official visit to Malawi, he said as neighbours, the problems facing the two countries are similar, hence the need for bilateral talks in order to solve them.
"My ambition was to make sure that the relations between us are strengthened. Therefore, sharing ideas and solving the problems together could be the best way of strengthening these relations," he said.
He said the relationship between Malawi and Zambia dates back to the colonial era when Zambia (known as Northern Rhodesia), Zimbabwe (Southern Rhodesia) and Malawi (Nyasaland) worked together as one entity known as the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland using the same currency.
The federation ended in 1963.--APA
