PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe who is also the Commander-In-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, says the liberation war is a permanent feature of the country’s history which should be well understood by every Zimbabwean, especially the youths who are the present and the future of the Zimbabwe.

President Mugabe was addressing members of the defence forces, guests and dignitaries at the commissioning of 62 Officer Cadets at the Zimbabwe Military Academy in Gweru. The graduands comprise three females and 59 males.

Areas covered include basic soldiering skills, conventional war fare and the law intensity war fare operation.

The course was designed to mould the graduands into all round military officers and to fully equip them with the necessary tactical, regimental and administrative skills that are critical in the day to day operations of a modern military officer.

The officers also had an opportunity to visit Chimoio in Mozambique and Freedom Camp in Zambia to broaden their knowledge on the liberation struggle.

In his address the president said a proper understanding of the sacrifices and suffering endured by the liberation fighters to liberate the country urges them to continue defending the nation.

The president called on Zimbabweans to emulate the country’s departed heroes and to be always ready to defend and cherish the country’s sovereignty and independence.

He paid tribute to the Zimbabwe Military Academy for continuing to train, educate and inspire junior officers into credible defendants of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

History was also made at the academy when the best student’s award, the Sword of Honour was scooped by a 20 year old Cheneso Chipepa, who beat her colleagues in the academic, physical training and practicals.
