ZAMBIA Union of Local Authority Workers (ZULAW) secretary general Noah Kalangu has appealed to the government to intervene in the continued wrangling among councillors and management in councils.
In an interview on Sunday, Kalangu said local government minister Dr Eustarckio Kazonga should intervene in the dismissal of five ZULAW branch officials in Kaoma.
“We are appealing to the government to intervene in the continued wrangling within councils especially Livingstone. This is affecting service delivery. It is not only Livingstone, the other local authorities are Nakonde and Chililabombwe and the government is aware,” he said.
He appealed to the politicians not to use council workers to settle scores.
“If the situation goes unchecked, it will adversely affect service delivery. Mind you, this rainy season we risk having an increase in cholera cases if service delivery is affected by continued wrangling in the councils. Here in Livingstone, a male councillor has taken the town clerk to the police while other female MMD councillors had to engage in a fight and are also at the police,” he said.
Kalangu said Dr Kazonga had a report over the five dismissed council workers in Kaoma.
“Our branch officials were illegally dismissed. We have written to the minister, but there is no feedback,” said Kalangu.
