DEPUTY Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara yesterday paid glowing tribute to President Mugabe, describing him as "a consistent leader with organisational capacity and strategic vision".

Introducing the president at International Women’s Day celebrations at Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex, DPM Mutambara said he now admires President Mugabe’s leadership after opposing him for two decades.

"Women need friends among men . . . The biggest and greatest ally for women of Zimbabwe is President Mugabe. Go to the history of the liberation struggle and see the role of RG Mugabe in terms of empowering women.

"We need consistent leadership. We need organisational capacity. We need strategic vision. I am here to present to you the personification of consistent leadership in the name of President Mugabe.

"I am here today to showcase organisational capacity. President Mugabe has been in charge of his party for 35 years.

"Since 1975, he has been able to maintain cohesion in his own political party. That requires consistent leadership.

"As Zimbabweans, we need to rise above the occasion and give credit where it is due, even if the credit undermines my political career," he said.

DPM Mutambara said President Mugabe has "generational" ideas that produced "generational" results like Independence.

"What is the generational result for Mutambara, Kasukuwere and Chamisa? As our generation, we are envious of you President Mugabe," he said.

The crowd shouted "Gushungo, Gushungo, Gushungo" during the introduction and cheered when President Mugabe and PM Morgan Tsvangirai greeted each other at the high table.

This was the first time the Global Political Agreement principals addressed a gathering in Chitungwiza since the formation of the inclusive Government in February last year.
