HOME affairs minister Mkhondo Lungu has disclosed that the government has constituted an inter-ministerial task force aimed at addressing illegal land acquisition and allocation in the country.
Addressing the media at his office in Lusaka, Lungu said government had made the move in view of the rising cases of illegal land acquisition and allocation.
He said the government has observed with concern the manner and scale at which people had tended to acquire land and carry out construction of structures throughout the country without following the law and laid down procedures.
“This illegal acquisition and development of land has gone to the extent of affecting township areas, forest reserves, national parks, game management areas as well as traditional land,” said Lungu.
“The situation has gone to such proportions that urgent action is required to be taken before it gets out of hand.”
Lungu said to this effect the government has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Task Force to address the matter.
The main objective of the Task Force is to identify areas which have been affected by the stated illegalities and recommend measures to be undertaken by the appropriate institutions.
“Members of the public are hereby advised to cooperate with the Task Force in order to restore order in the acquisition, allocation and development of land in Zambia,” Lungu said.
The Inter-Ministerial Task Force comprises the ministries of Lands, Home Affairs, Local Government, Tourism and Justice.
