William Banda should be caged in order to have a violence-free 2011 general elections, says Judith Kapijimpanga. In an interview, Kapijimpanga, who is MMD national executive committee (NEC) chairperson of lands, said people who agitate for violence should be caged as the nation heads towards this year’s tripartite elections.

“People like Lusaka Province MMD chairperson William Banda who openly agitated for violence should be caged because it violence is alien to some of us. We have gone into elections with no violence. So violence has come as a very alien thing to us. So I think it is about time this thing ended,” Kapijimpanga said.

“We want peace and tranquility in our nation especially that we are a Christian nation. And we call upon the Lord to prevail over us, especially those who are violent minded.”

Kapijimpanga said Banda should be disciplined for openly agitating for violence, saying she joined MMD when she was very young and had never experienced this level of violence.

She said women were scared of participating in politics because of the violence.

“He should not propagate violence. It is not Zambian,” said Kapijimpanga.

And Kapijimpanga said it would be good if people were allowed to declare their intentions to challenge President Rupiah Banda for the MMD presidency at the national convention.

She said it was good if President Banda knew in advance those who would challenge him.

“Campaigns have not been announced that they should start, but those who want to declare for certain positions should be allowed…if people won’t declare, we won’t know who wants to stand against the President and when we go to the convention they will frog jump. Even those vying for other positions should be allowed to declare their intentions,” said Kapijimpanga.

She was commenting on the recent violence within the MMD during accreditation of delegates to the party’s Lusaka provincial conference that resulted to its postponement.
