FREDERICK Chiluba says he has forgiven 1997 coup plotter Steven Lungu aka Capt Solo. Speaking when Capt Solo visited him at his Kabulonga residence in Lusaka yesterday to seek forgiveness, Chiluba said he had forgiven Capt Solo for what he did.

He said Capt Solo’s coup attempt was the devil’s deed meant to crush the declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation but God stopped him. He said Capt Solo should not look at himself as a loser but a winner because he had come to know God.

He said he had also forgiven Capt Solo’s co-mastermind Jack Chiti and they reconciled before his death.

Chiluba thanked President Banda for pardoning Capt Solo.

Chiluba said he had forgiven late president Levy Mwanawasa and his family despite what he Chiluba went through.

“We don’t consider our families as enemies,” Chiluba said.

And Capt Solo said he was sorry for what he did and sought forgiveness.

Capt Solo said if Chiluba forgave him, he would be a free man.

He appealed to Chiluba to ask President Banda to pardon his colleague Alfred Kamanga and other prisoners that had been in prison for a long time.

Chiluba and Capt Solo later hugged.

And Chiluba called for peace ahead of this year’s elections.

Chiluba said the elections must not be marred with violence because the vice disturbed the process of choice and freedom of expression.
