No one will starve — Mujuru

THE Government is committed to sourcing adequate food to ensure parts of the country that failed to produce enough grain do not starve, Vice-President Mujuru has said.

Speaking at belated Zanu-PF victory celebrations in Mutare South yesterday, she said the authorities were aware that some areas did not perform according to expectation during the summer cropping season owing to a prolonged dry spell that resulted in crops wilting.

She said Government was working to ensure no one in the affected regions starved.
Yesterday’s gathering celebrated Mutare South House of Assembly Member Cde Fred Kanzama’s resounding victory in the 2008 harmonised elections and that of 11 Zanu-PF councillors who outwitted their rivals in the polls.

“We are fully aware of the need for food in some parts of the country, including Mutare South constituency,” she said.

“It is unfortunate that after the initial rains that were received in most parts of the country we thought we were going to have a good rainy season. But that was not the case.

“In some areas, crops experienced lengthy dry spells and this resulted in some crops wilting.

“Therefore, we are indeed aware of the need to make sure we source enough food for the people in such areas and ensure we avert starvation.

“In fact, I can assure you that no one will starve.”

Speaking at the same occasion, the Zanu-PF national chairman, Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo, urged party supporters to remain united and work towards electoral victory.

In his emotive yet jovial speech, he reminded the gathering to safeguard the country’s independence which, he said, came as a result of a protracted liberation struggle.

“We are enjoying this freedom today simply because of the sacrifices that were made by other people, some of whom lost their lives in the process.

“This is one thing that we should always remind ourselves as responsible citizens of this beautiful country.

“Let me urge you, the people of Manicaland, to remain united and never give in to the divisive politics of the enemy.

“You must always be aware of the fact that the motto of the party is “unity, peace and development”.

“These are the guiding principles that govern our behaviour as a people of one nation.”

Cde Kanzama was optimistic efforts to avert starvation in drought-prone areas were on course.

“I really want to thank the Vice-President for pledging that there will be no starvation because we are all aware that Mutare South is one of the worst affected areas,” he said.

“In the same vein, we would also want to passionately implore the powers-that-be to assist us in the speedy completion of Mpudzi Dam Project. This project will go a long way in weaning our people from the cancerous donor dependency syndrome.”

Media, Information and Publicity Minister and Zanu-PF national political commissar Cde Webster Shamu; the Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office, Cde Sylvester Nguni; Politburo member Cde Munacho Mutezo; Manicaland Governor and Resident Minister Cde Chris Mushohwe; Zanu-PF provincial chairman Cde Mike Madiro; Chimanimani Senator Cde Monica Mutsvangwa and Zanu-PF Central Committee member Cde Enoch Porusingazi were among those who graced the occasion.-The Sunday Mail
