A Lusaka Division police officer, Sylvester Shipolo was yesterday awarded by the Anti Corruption Commission for turning down a bribe. In an interview, Shipolo said he was awarded a sum of K500,000 by ACC after he turned down a bribe of K800,000 on an examination malpractice case he was handling in 2008.

"I was monitoring the issue of examination malpractices with the DEBS District Education Board Secretary and this is when the bribe was advanced by the mother to the girl who was at Kasamba Basic School in Matero and the girl was eventually sentenced to seven months imprisonment at Chimbokaila," Shipolo said.

He said he hoped that his action would help to get rid of the perception that was held by the public about the police being corrupt.

"Not all police officers are corrupt, we have people like myself who are not and so this gesture by the ACC will go a long way in encouraging my fellow officers and also the public that they can actually turn down bribes. So this award has actually come at the right time and it is my Christmas bonus," said Shipolo who is an assistant superintendent in charge of operations.

Shipolo further revealed that the letter of award was given to him in February this year under the MMD but that he was getting the prize now, three months after the PF's ascendancy to power.

And according to the ACC letter which was signed by Clement Chansa, an officer from the commission, Shipolo was awarded for his exemplary behaviour in turning down a bribe.
