Science, maths critical for development - JICA

JICA Resident representative Shiro Nabeya says science and mathematics are critical subjects for any country's socio-economic development and poverty reduction.

Speaking when he handed over nine vehicles donated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to the Ministry of Education on Tuesday, Nabeya said the belief that science and mathematics were critical for development and poverty reduction came from his country's historical experience of development.

The nine vehicles were meant for the Strengthening Teachers' Performance and Skills (STEPS) programme which was initiated last October.

"Japan's support to Zambia in strengthening the teaching and learning of science and mathematics is intended to contribute to addressing the challenges of the effective teaching and learning of these subjects in Zambian schools," said Nabeya.

Education minister Dr John Phiri said the main thrust of the project would be to address issues of quality with particular emphasis on capacity building of grade eight to 12 science and mathematics teachers.

Dr Phiri said the project would also build capacity of resource persons such as headteachers, teacher educators and other key ministry human resources.

The vehicles were distributed to six provincial education officers while the directorate of education was given three vehicles.
