MDC leader Welshman Ncube has recorded an interview with the BBC’s HARDtalk programme which will air on Tuesday. Ncube has become a major political player in Zimbabwe after taking over the MDC presidency in February 2011, succeeding Arthur Mutambara.

In a statement, his MDC party said his appearance on HARDtalk – an iconic BBC interview programme broadcast around the world – was proof that the law professor was “fast becoming the logical alternative Zimbabwean political voice”.

“Ncube is now firmly on the world stage and it has become accepted that Zimbabwe's political landscape is not bi-polar but tri-polar,” said party spokesman Nhlanhla Dube.

“While many have for a long time sought to stage-manage the debate of our national politics to accentuate the voices of Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai in a very self-limiting way, the world view has been changing and changing fast and dramatically.”

The interview with the Sudanese-British journalist Zeinab Badawi touched “all manner of issues in what should be the most intense, honest, well-articulated and revealing understanding of our political space and the answers we need to be seeking for a template of the Zimbabwe we want to live in,” Dube added.
Ncube’s MDC won 10 parliamentary seats and six senate seats in the March 2008 general elections.

The party is targeting a significant increase in its vote share at the next elections. The party has been on a massive membership drive in the three Matabeleland provinces and the Midlands – the bedrock of its support.

MDC-T leader and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, MDC-T treasurer Roy Bennett, MDC secretary for legal affairs and Education Minister David Coltart, Zanu PF MP Jonathan Moyo and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara featured on the programme over the last six years.

HARDtalk airs on the BBC News Channel (UK) on Tuesday, September 18 on the following time slots: 03:30, 08:30, 15:30 & 20:30 GMT
