CIVIL Society for Poverty Reduction board chairperson Partner Siabutuba says the government's announcement that it will in the next four years work on reducing poverty is a well-meaning and timely decision.

Commenting on chiefs and traditional affairs minister Professor Nkandu Luo's statement last week that the Patriotic Front will in its remaining four years work on reducing poverty levels as well as uplifting the living standards of the people when she addressed a royal council meeting in Macha chiefdom in Choma, Siabutuba said poverty remained a big challenge in the country which needed concerted efforts to fight it.

Prof Luo said her party had an obligation to deliver development to the Zambians as it promised them during the campaign period, adding that poverty levels still remain high in the country hence the need for the government to quickly address the situation as part of its fulfilment of the campaign promises.

"We take the minister's declaration as very serious and very important. It is based on the fact that Southern Province, despite its potential, seems to have been lagging behind on the number of developmental aspects," Siabutuba said.

He advised the opposition to offer solutions as opposed to just criticising the policies of the government.

"Can we put aside political differences and help government to perform. While the politicians are proud of taking their political opinions, they should also say how they are going to help government deliver," said Siabutuba.

"There is need for the reduction of poverty and see how we can support one another for the development of this country."
