RUPIAH Banda has accused the government of peddling lies against him.
On Tuesday, information minister Kennedy Sakeni revealed that former president Banda, MMD leader Nevers Mumba, his UPND counterpart Hakainde Hichilema and Sakwiba Sikota travelled to South Africa and held a press conference in Johannesburg to denounce the Zambian government over what they termed abuse of human rights.
But President Michael Sata on Thursday said Banda went to South Africa to seek criminal asylum. According to a statement from his office, Banda stated that his frequent travels were planned in advance. He stated that it was regrettable that the government could revel in peddling falsehoods against its own citizen.
"I wholly reject this deliberate misinformation. I have been on a trip that was planned long ago, at the completion of which I intend to return to Zambia. Any statements that have been made regarding fabricated ideas of 'asylum' or 'charges' have no basis in fact," stated Banda.
