SOUTHERN Province minister Daniel Munkombwe says opposition political leaders who do not want to rally behind President Rupiah Banda are irrelevant.

During a Christmas party for Sons of Thunder Orphaned Children organised by David Livingstone Safari Lodge in Senkobo on Friday, Munkombwe said that even US and British politicians had shown their support for President-elect Barack Obama and Gordon Brown despite the global financial crunch.

“Those of you who accept positions of leadership in the country should strive to make a difference, even if you are a general manager, a managing director the whole world is under economic difficulties. If we think that it’s only government that makes a difference, then we are irrelevant,” he said.

In an apparent reference to PF president Michael Sata, Munkombwe said that opposition leaders should provide a solution to the many difficulties being faced by Zambians, instead of just castigating the government.

“Even those in opposition should provide a solution, even us in government should also be seen to be relevant. If you are a provincial educational officer, if you are a district accounting officer and you have no connections to the people, then you are irrelevant,” he said.

Munkombwe said the government alone could not manage to change lives of the people and over dependence on the government was a sign of laziness.

“Government alone cannot plant a field. Just because you are in the opposition don’t just blame the government or you will soon start to tell the government to prepare meals for you,” he said.

Munkombwe said that those who render a helping hand to the orphans were doing God’s work.

“Look at this smiling orphan, God’s job is being done,” he said.

And David Livingstone Safari Lodge general manager Peter Vaan Raaj said that the less fortunate in society must be given a helping hand for them to feel loved.

“These 45 children need all the kind assistance and a little thought of donating food and clothes to them makes them fill loved instead of being unfortunate,” said Raaj.
