THOSE close to President Banda should not think they are favourites, an aspiring candidate for the position of MMD Eastern Province chairperson has said. In an interview, Michael Phiri said no one should be allowed to use the name of the President as a campaign tool.

“Those that are close to the President should not use him as a campaign tool because the President needs to be given good leadership and not mediocre leadership. Those that are close to the President should not think they are favourites to scoop this position. Let them campaign using their own manifesto,” he said.

Phiri said the province needed a mature and level-headed leadership.

He said some individuals in the current leadership were inciting people in Mambwe not to allow him to campaign there.

“How can they start to intimidate people? You know quality leadership is what is paramount for the survival of the party. Members of parliament should also ensure that we have a mature leadership after the conference,” said Phiri.

Recently provincial chairperson Kennedy Zulu said he had over 200 per cent chance of retaining his position during the provincial conference that is to be held soon.

He said his committee had performed according to the people’s expectations.

Zulu is expected to compete against Phiri and a Chipata businessman Chishala Chilufya for the position of provincial chairman.
