ZAMBIAN people insisted for change because MMD leaders were corrupt, says Bishop John Mambo.

Commenting on MMD Southern Province chairperson Edgar Keembe's statement on Sunday that people should stop insulting the MMD by referring to it as a corrupt party, Bishop Mambo, the former Church of God overseer, said there was evidence of the MMD's corruption.

He said the most sensible thing for the party to do was to apologise publicly for its corruption.

"If you are a pastor and you have problems, you cover everybody…The reason why we insisted upon change is because we realised that there was no life at the end of the tunnel. We kept on saying Zambia is improving but evidence is there that money was misused," he said.

Bishop Mambo said poverty levels were high under the MMD because leaders were corrupt in their mind.

He said the Church was to blame for not making the MMD and its government to account for their false swearing that they would uphold the Constitution.

Bishop Mambo said the only way to wage a proper war against corruption was to create institutions of governance that would create checks and balances outside the government.

"If you bury money instead of saving money, you are corrupt. They (MMD) were so corrupt that they were having chitenge on top of trees when my mother in the village had no chitenge. When the kids at Nyanpande (Orphanage) had to wait for a big brother in America, it was bent on buying people; how many vehicles did they have? From nowhere money was found, it's all corruption, it was gross indiscipline. It was a sin, corrupt mind, corrupt leaders and corrupt cadres," said Bishop Mambo.
