Presidential ambitions are for the desperate - Kunda

MUCHINGA MMD member of parliament Howard Kunda says presidential ambitions are for those who are desperate. Kunda urged MMD members to support current party president Nevers Mumba.
He said he wanted to focus on reorganising youths in the MMD for the upcoming general elections in 2016 and that he still had faith the MMD could bounce back to power. He called for hard work among youths if they wanted to win the 2016 elections.
"My job at the moment is to reorganise the youth in my party. Presidential ambitions are for those who are desperate and who want to rush for things. I will wait for my time. My time is not yet here and when it comes, everyone will know. For now, we will support our current president Dr Mumba," he said.
Kunda said he could only have presidential ambitions after the current party leadership.
"I personally don't have any presidential ambitions for now. When people who are there are no longer there, then we can step in. For now, we have our party president in Dr Nevers Mumba, who we are preparing, and we will be backing him in the 2016 elections," Kunda said.
He said he had confidence in the current MMD leadership to deliver and win the 2016 elections, adding that all members needed to be committed if they wanted to get back to power.
Kunda said the MMD was still a strong party with structures countrywide.

Kunda can't add value to PF - Chali

HOWARD Kunda cannot add any value to Patriotic Front, says Central Province PF chairman Benson Chali.
And Central Province PF treasurer Louis Chikoka says Kunda is not a factor in Zambian politics.
Commenting on Kunda's statement that he would only join the ruling PF if he were given the position of Vice-President of the Republic of Zambia, Chali said the PF would only give positions to politicians that would add value to the ruling party.
"We recently had two by-elections in his constituency, namely Chibale and Masaninga wards, and Howard Kunda and his MMD performed badly in those by-elections," explained Chali. "That shows you that he is a politician without value. The PF can only give positions to politicians that will come and add value to the Patriotic Front. But Howard Kunda cannot add value to the PF. Even at ward level, the PF would beat him."
And Chikoka said that Howard was not a factor in Zambian politics.
"Who does Howard Kunda think he is?" wondered Chikoka in an interview. "Howard Kunda is not a factor in Zambian politics. He won the Muchinga Constituency seat through a sympathy vote."
Chikoka advised Kunda not to ride on his late father's fortunes.
"He thinks just because his late father was vice-president, then he can also become vice-president of the Republic of Zambia!" Chikoka said. "This is not a monarchy. If he thinks this country is a chiefdom, then he is dreaming."
He said Kunda needed orientation in politics.
"This young man needs extra lessons in politics. He needs orientation in this field…he needs to be trained," Chikoka said. "And I would suggest that he picks on 'Bowas' Bowman Lusambo as his coach in politics. Lusambo will show him how we do politics."
Kunda recently stated on a privately-owned radio station that he would only defect from MMD to join PF on condition that he is given the position of Republican Vice-President because he was "beyond a deputy minister."

Kachingwe defends MMD officials seeking govt jobs

MUCHINGA MMD member of parliament Howard Kunda has described senior MMD officials frequenting State House for jobs as betrayers. But MMD national secretary Major Richard Kachingwe says there is nothing wrong with senior MMD members looking for jobs from President Michael Sata.
In an interview Kunda, who is the son of late Republican vice-president George Kunda, said senior officials frequenting State House with a view to getting jobs were not genuine leaders.
"Those people who are frequenting State House from the MMD they are not good leaders. We need a strong opposition, so that we can provide effective checks and balances. That is why we are there in Parliament… is to check government's way of doing things," he said.
"They are betraying the leadership of MMD because you see we go into the party because we believe in the policies of the party. We are adopted and we go through to represent the people who have voted for us. If we start going into the government because we want to have an easy life, that is wrong. We have to represent the people who voted for us."
Kunda urged MMD members of parliament to continue serving the people who voted for them, even if it was tough to be in the opposition.
"I know it is tough in the opposition but we have to be strong and just forge ahead. It is not for us. It is for the Zambian people. For me, I wouldn't try even to go there to State House to look for a job," he said.
"For what? I have a job. The Zambian people in Muchinga Constituency have given me a job to represent them. Eventually, we will come back into power and continue from where we left as MMD."
But Kachingwe said he did not hold a grudge against party members entering State House for jobs.
"It is their democratic right. If somebody is looking for a job from the head of state, that is okay. First of all, these jobs are for Zambians. They are not for an individual class or what, no. They are for Zambians and those who are going to State House are Zambians. You cannot start holding a grudge against anybody entering State House," he said.
"I don't know whether they have been given jobs all of them. But to me if there are jobs in Zambia, they are for Zambians and if there are Zambians looking for jobs, let them look for them."
Asked on reports that he in particular had been frequenting State House for consideration by President Sata, he responded: "I have told you State House is for everybody. Were you told that I was looking for a job? I am chief executive officer of this party. Posterity will judge me harshly if I leave this party. That (State House) is where the head of state is. The head of state is the father of everybody. Anybody can go there. I don't hold any grudge for anybody for going to State House, no. We don't do that as a party. Most of our members tell us they have been called by the President and we tell them he is the President, go."
