Namwala embarkment is impassable - Met Dept

THE Meteorological department has revealed that the road along the Namwala embarkment has become impassable making access to Itezhi-tezhi district through Namwala impossible.
In a crop weather bulletin report for Southern Province, provincial meteorological officer Munalula Mate stated that the seasonal forecast for 2009/2010 indicated likelihood of normal rainfall for October to March period.
"High water level around Lake Kariba was noted at Chipepo harbour. The road along the Namwala embarkment has become impassable making access to Itezhi-tezhi impossible," he stated.
And Mate added that the second heavy rainfall recorded above 100 millimetres was at the Zambia Adventist University in Monze.
"Heavy rainfall above 100 mm was recorded at Moorings in Monze; 187mm, Zambia Adventist University (ZAU); 150mm, Namayoba (Monze) 116mm. Gwembe and Munyumbwe had 114mm and 102mm respectively," he stated.
Mate added that heavy rainfall above 50mm was recorded elsewhere across the province except Sinazongwe where moderate rainfall was received.
"At Sinazeze 32mm and Siameja 23mm. Similar pattern has been observed compared to last season except for extreme heavier falls experienced in Monze district. The dekadal rainfall performance is above normal in most areas except Sinazongwe district, which received below normal rainfall. The seasonal rainfall performance is above normal in most parts of the province except for Sinazongwe where below normal rainfall performance was observed," he stated.
Mate further added that the highest cumulative rainfall figures above 150mm were recorded over most districts with Gwembe recording 201mm, Monze 199 and Livingstone 163mm.

Met dept projects more rainfall over S/Province

THE Zambia Meteorological Department (ZMD) has projected increased rainfall activity over the Southern Province as the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) oscillates over the central and southern parts of the country.
Southern Province senior meteorological officer Munalula Mate stated that heavy rainfall was expected over the western and eastern parts of the province.
The seasonal cumulative rainfall so far indicates normal to above normal performance, but Siavonga and Namwala districts have over the last few days experienced a dry spell which has adversely affected crop performance.
“The seasonal rainfall indicates normal performance over most parts of the province with Munyumbwe, Maamba and Chipepo acquiring the highest surplus of 54 per cent, 26 per cent and 27 per cent, respectively,” he stated.

Met department warns of floods

THEZambia Meteorological Department (ZMD) has warned of flash floods in some areas that were affected during the last rainy season.
Southern Province senior meteorological officer Munalula Mate disclosed that the areas that experienced floods during the last season were likely to face the problem again.
“There’s a likelihood of flash floods in most areas which were affected last season. Flash floods were experienced during the last season, destroying infrastructure and fields,” he said.
Mate said Southern Province was likely to record heavy rainfall activity over the next dekad due to the influence of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) oscillating between the central and southern borders of the province.
And cut worms are reported to be attacking maize fields in some parts of Namwala district due to the persistent dry weather conditions.
Mate said the extent of the damage to the maize fields was still being assessed.
