PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe’s wife, Grace has pleaded with increasingly restless Zimbabweans not to turn against the long serving leader, adding this will plunge the country into irreversible turmoil.
She was addressing thousands of party supporters during her Harare rally Thursday afternoon.
Those who attended the Mbare rally received free bottled water from the First Lady. The 500 ml bottles had stickers which bore the Zanu PF logo and the familiar words: "Mother of the Nation Amai Dr Grace Mugabe".
Grace repeatedly referred to her husband as a hero and urged Zimbabweans not to emulate Arab countries which she said were misled by the US into deposing their leaders.
“Please let us not mislead one another...our enemies are still bitter that they have been outsmarted by Zanu PF and still want to continue destabilising our country,” Grace said in a Shona address that lasted for more than an hour.
The First Lady said the US defied the UN by invading Iraq back in 2003 leading to the ouster and subsequent execution of its leader Saddam Hussein.
Since then, she said, the Asian country has never seen any peace.
“Even the former British Prime Minister (Tony Blair) has since apologised for bombing Iraq. There is nothing left of Iraq now," Grace said.
“They did the same in Libya, killing (Muammar) Gaddafi for no apparent reason. As we speak, bombs explode everyday; people do not know when next a bomb will explode or when guns would be fired.
“So in our country let us endure our hardships but in peace.”
Zimbabwe’s security situation remains volatile with desperate citizens now turning to selling all manner of trinkets to survive.
President Mugabe's government, sensing the apparent security risk posed by thousands of illegal vendors in CBDs, has moved to dislodge the traders from city streets under the pretext of restoring their glitter.
Police has responded with brute force to continued attempts by opposition activists to stage street marches to protest massive joblessness.
The opposition blames the current economic tailspin on President Mugabe’s failing leadership.
However, the First Lady took time to blame the situation on sanctions, which she said were imposed on the current government by the West at the instigation of the opposition.
