By Richard Luo in Sinda

CHIEFTAINESS Nyanje of the Nsenga people in Sinda district has expressed concern at the high rate of deforestation in the area.

In an interview at her palace on Friday, chieftainess Nyanje said some people in the area were indiscriminately cutting down trees for burning charcoal. She said there was a high demand for charcoal in the district.

Chieftainess Nyanje said the indiscriminate cutting of trees also contributed to climate change.

She said it was unfortunate that some people were even cutting trees in reserved and respected areas such as graveyards, saying according to tradition, it was wrong to do so.

Chieftainess Nyanje said a man was penalised after he was found cutting trees at a graveyard, adding that she would not hesitate to punish anyone found engaging in similar acts.

And Chipata Central member of parliament Reuben Mtolo Phiri has encouraged people to develop a culture of planting trees.

Phiri appealed to councillors and ward chairpersons to take part in the tree-planting exercises.

He said the government had released a lot of trees which were supposed to be planted in the constituency.

Phiri, who was on a weekend tour of the constituency, also visited some projects being implemented in the constituency.

CHIEF Kaduku of Mozambique has hailed Zambia for rendering good medical services to his people.

In an interview at Nyanje village in Sinda district on Monday, chief Kaduku said his area would have lost many lives had it not been for Zambian health services.

He thanked chieftainess Nyanje of the Nsenga people in Sinda for allowing Mozambicans to have access to health services at the RCZ-run Nyanje hospital and also allowing them to grind their maize in Zambia.

Chief Kaduku further expressed happiness with the Ministry of Health through Nyanje and St Francis hospitals for attending to his people.
Chief Kaduku said he had never received any report of his people being mistreated in Zambia.

He said it was unfortunate that previously, some Zambians were being harassed by some Mozambicans and this instilled fear in Zambians to even do business in the neighbouring country.

He also assured Zambians to be free to visit Mozambique to conduct business.

Chief Kaduku said Mozambicans were learning a lot of through from Zambian radio stations.

"Ma radio station ya mu Zambia monga Mphangwe ya pa Katete, Maria ndi Breeze ya ku Chipata ya tithandiza kwambiri pa maluso ndi kumanga mabanja ya anthu (Zambian radio stations like Mphangwe in Katete, Maria and Breeze in Chipata have helped on various matters like skills and bringing families together)," he said.

Chief Kaduku called for continued cooperation between Zambia and his country.

Chieftainess Nyanje urges more sensitisation on kwacha rebasing

Chieftainess Nyanje urges more sensitisation on kwacha rebasing
By Christopher Miti in Sinda
Tue 20 Nov. 2012, 10:57 CAT

CHIEFTAINESS Nyanje of the Nsenga people in Sinda district says her people still need more sensitisation on the rebasing of the currency.

In an interview on Saturday, chieftainess Nyanje said some unscrupulous individuals will be taking advantage of villagers' ignorance over the rebased currency in business transactions.

She said although Bank of Zambia conducted sensitisation programmes in the area, more still needed to be done.

"These people (from Bank of Zambia) came here and they informed us but I strongly feel more needs to be done. You people in villages need constant reminders because living things the way they are it means crooks will be taking advantage of people's ignorance and steal from them," chieftainess Nyanje said.
She also commended the government for commencing the road rehabilitation exercise in her area.
Chieftainess Nyanje said most roads in her chiefdom were last repaired by the UNIP government.

"We are happy because President Michael Sata has given us road-making equipment and has also started repairing roads. This (Sinda/Nyanje) road is a busy road because it leads to the hospital and I am hopeful people will be accessing the hospital without difficulties," she said.
Chieftainess Nyanje also appealed to the government to expedite fertiliser delivery for this farming season.

She said people in the area need farming inputs as early as possible.
Chieftainess Nyanje also warned her subjects against marrying off their children at a tender age.
